Winter
Sports Dinner & Awards 2007
We
held our annual Winter Sports Dinner on Thursday,
2 August and it was an opportunity to thank
the pupils, their parents and the coaches
for their dedication, commitment and the sacrifices
they have made during the season. It was indeed
a memorable occasion and a fitting opportunity
to acknowledge the contribution our sportsmen
and -women have made. It is incredible that
a school our size fielded five rugby teams,
six boys’ hockey sides, eight girls’
hockey teams and six netball teams. It echoes
our philosophy of mass participation, but
in a competitive sense. There is absolutely
nothing wrong in being competitive, because
it breeds excellence. It represents the realities
of life where one can be challenged to the
extreme.
A
new Colours Award was introduced this year
as we felt there was a gap between the team
award, which is primarily for participation
and the Honours Award, which is an award for
excellence. Grade 11 and 12 pupils can qualify
for Colours. They should have represented
a First Team in 80% of the matches played.
The players should contribute to the team
as a whole and be deemed by the coaches to
have had a significant impact on the team.
Their behaviour should also be such that the
players bring credit to the College. The Colours
Award is made for above-average performance
and not long service. Other factors to be
taken into account:
-
The level of performance compared to the
level achieved by other members of the team
or activity;
- Selection
for a representative team.
The
motivation of the coach, based on performance
and attitude, is imperative.
