Chess
2012
Some old chess favourites,
Lethu Simelane, Warwick Collett and
Calvin Stawski, have really improved
their tactics over the years and are
now threateningly confident. Of the
juniors, Philip McCarter has certainly
thrown the team in array with his
calm and misleadingly sweet demeanour.
The seniors are very quick to take
this young player on only to have
the pants beaten off them! In the
Second Term we played Acek Academy
where Ollie Ngonyama, Marlise Sacur,
Nhlanhla Thabethe, Christian Taylor
and Warwick Collett all won their
games. Philip McCarter held on with
the strongest of players in their
team with a win and three stalemates.
Acek scored 11 points over our 6.
The
Inter-House challenges this year proved
astounding. As in the past, there
were very few Bishop players, which
is not a true reflection of their
ability. College and Founders pitted
their wits against one another, alternating
in winning scores. Tied at 26-26,
Kevin Dieltens in Founders forged
a win over Liam Courtney in College.
This was negated when Kurt Spence
and Marlise Sacur took their respective
reins and claimed victory over Founders,
giving a final score of College –
36, Founders - 34 and Bishop a good
18 points. For the Third Term, Bishop
made a huge comeback scoring 29 points,
Founders 28 points and College 18.
Having Philip in the Bishop team has
certainly strengthened their position.
The
top scorers for the year are Kurt
Spence, Nhlanhla Thabethe, Kiran Coetzee,
Marc Grové, Reneilwe Lebea
and Firaz Sheikh.
