BACK
TO THE 80's ...THE
TOTALLY AWESOME MUSICAL
This
show was a nostalgic romp through
the world of 80s music the decade
that provided an incredibly broad
spectrum of music, fashion and
trends. From punks
to new romantics, from pretty
boys to Rastas, this was the era
of big hair, boys wearing make-up,
padded shoulders, and shiny stuff.
Looking
back, the 80's launched Madonna
as our favourite Material
Girl, Michael Jackson was
not sure about The Man in
the Mirror but the world
was sure about Thriller,
the biggest-selling hit of all
time. Wham! had the girls
screaming (was it their hair gel?),
and Lionel Richie had everyone
Dancing On the Ceiling.
Adam Ant worried our parents with
his weird clothes, as did Boy
George. Bob Geldof brought
our attention to world hunger
with Band Aid and this was matched
by USA for Africas We are
the World. Tears for
Fears wanted to Rule the World,
Cindi Lauper Just Wanted to
Have Fun, Frankie goes to
Hollywood encouraged us to Relax,
and Dexys Midnight Runners pleaded
Come on Eileen.
Not to mention old favourites
Dire Straits, Queen, The Rolling
Stones, Phil Collins, and Bruce
Springsteen who just kept on rocking.
BACK
TO THE 80's ...THE
TOTALLY AWESOME MUSICAL
is a story which takes place on
a high school campus, with well-known
music of the era interwoven amidst
the dynamics of various relationships.
Anita Schonauer and Annelize Verster
directed a talented cast of 30
Uplands students ranging from
Grade 8 to Matric, and Riegardt
Smit and Kiara Visser assisted
with the choreography. The
students participating in BACK
TO THE 80's entertained
the audience with an array of
vocals, drama and dancing.
