The
11th Annual Founders Evening Celebrations
took place on Thursday evening, 29
May 2008 in the Uplands College Hall.
The symbolic candle-lighting ceremony,
the oldest and most revered tradition
at Uplands, is seen as the light of
knowledge passed on from the Prep
School to the College. It was followed
by the address of the Chairman, Mr
Miles Japhet, who gave an insightful
perspective on the role Uplands College
has to play in South Africa and to
‘do good’.
The Founders Evening is not only to
celebrate the inception of the College,
but can be regarded as a ‘Cultural
Festival’ where the best music
and dance items by College pupils
were on display, forming part of the
Inter-House Music competition. The
impressive Inter-House cultural extravaganza
provides a platform for pupils to
explore their cultural and musical
talents. The music and dance programmes
included items on flute, guitar, piano,
cello, drums and saxophone; ensembles,
solo vocals and choir performances;
and ballet, hip-hop dance and group
dances. Thea Moller adjudicated the
evening.
The
diverse talent made the adjudicator’s
task of isolating a winner a daunting
one, with the following awards being
made:
