Claire
Jets to Los Angeles
Claire Thomson, a Grade 12 pupil from
Uplands College, joined the South African
team at the OR Tambo Airport on 23 July
2007 and flew via Hong Kong to Los Angeles.
The South African team was hosted by
the Westin Bonaventure Hotel, where
the World Championships of Performing
Arts was to be held. Teams of models,
actors, singers, dancers and instrumentalists
from numerous countries such as Canada,
America, Mexico, Armenia, Australia,
Austria, Bolivia, Guatemala, Hungary,
Jamaica, Karabakh, Kazakhstan, Trinidad
and Tobago, New Zealand, Philippines
and Ukraine participated. During their
stay, the South African team toured
Los Angeles visiting Disneyland, Knottsberry
Farm, Universal Studios and the walk
of fame. Although there was plenty of
fun and excitement there was also a
lot of work to be done.
The competition started on 28 July,
demonstrating a feast of talent for
the following week. The South African
participants outdid themselves by taking
home most of the medals and overall
trophies.
Claire Thomson achieved two bronze medals
for her jazz and world music category
and also received an industrial award.
The South African team arrived home
and were welcomed by a host of television
reporters and cameras. They all sang
the National Anthem with their medals
glinting on their chests.
Claire Thompson said, “This is
a trip I will never forget. I had the
opportunity to taste a bit of what the
entertainment industry has to offer
and I’m extremely blessed to be
able to chase my dream.”
