Uplands
Adventure Race
The
first Adventure Race hosted by Uplands
College on 13 October 2007 was designed
to be a sprint race of about 25 km,
where team work and group participation
were key to completing each task. Teams
consisted of four members, including
at least one member of the opposite
gender. The race started at 06h00 with
a 4.5 km run. During this leg, the teams
had to shoot a target with a paintball
gun in a clearing in the forest. After
running back to school, there was a
relay race in the pool during which
participants had to recover 1 kg weights
from the pool.
Then followed a 20 km
cycle to Longmere Dam, where the teams
had to paddle to and fro across the
width of the dam. Next the teams cycled
to the Uplands Institute Dam. After
having built a raft out of tubes and
poles, the contestants had to swim across
the dam.
Ms Heidi Cordeiro, Mr
John Kerchhoff and Mr Phil Hemus - surprisingly
one of the staff teams from Bishop House
– came in first. They were closely
followed by another staff team from
Founders House – that of Ms Jane
Scannell, Mr Hilton Pellow-Jarman, Mr
Albert Pienaar and Mr Riegardt Smit
- proving that the teachers still have
what it takes to beat the younger generation.
The
first pupil team to finish was that
of Ryan Lovett, Jonathan Myburgh, Shaun
Emmerick and Jenaed Brodell. Bishop
House was the overall winner of the
Adventure Race.
