Independent
Co-Ed Schools Sports Festival
April
2009
A
combined First and Second Boys’
Hockey team took part in the Independent
Schools Co-ed Festival at Treverton
during the April holidays (six of the
regular First Team players were in Argentina
with the Rugby tour). Despite being
under-strength and playing against first
teams from around Southern Africa, the
boys achieved excellent results and
won four out of the five matches. Uplands
beat Watershed (Zimbabwe) 4-0, Heron
Bridge 4-0, Hillcrest 3-1 and Treverton
1-0 and lost 0-2 to Thomas More College.
The top goal scorer was Justin
Best who scored four goals.
Jonathan Myburgh and
Kevin Addison each
scored three goals. Kevin was awarded
the trophy for the ‘Best Midfield
Player’ at the tournament. We
enjoyed the support of two ex-staff
members, Mr Jarman and Mr Carlisle while
at the festival and overall, the boys
were excellent ambassadors for the school.
A
combined Second and U16 Girls’
Hockey team represented Uplands at the
Festival. The ladies did exceptionally
well, considering they were an under
strength team playing against 1st teams
from other schools. Uplands won 3 of
our 5 matches and beat Heron Bridge
3-0, Sunderland 2-1 and the host, Treverton,
2-0. We narrowly lost 2-3 to Hillcrest
and lost 1-4 to Wykham Collegiate. The
girls can be really proud of their performance
and I’m sure the have gained invaluable
experience and confidence going forward.
