Awards 2009
Sportsman
of the Year was shared this
year by Kevin Addison
and Neil Brokensha.
Kevin’s true passion is hockey:
he represented the First Team for three
consecutive years. He captained the
Firsts, received Honours for Hockey
and the trophy for the Best Player of
the Year in 2009. He has played provincial
Hockey since 2005 and was elected Captain
of the Mpumalanga U18A side in 2009.
He was arguably the best junior Hockey
player in the province this year. He
was also selected for the Mpumalanga
Men’s IPT Hockey Team this year
and has a Provincial Level 4 Umpiring
qualification. He also received Colours
for Cricket in 2009.
Neil really came to the fore this year
on the sports field and has established
himself as one of the most talented
sportsman this school has ever produced.
He was a member of the school’s
swimming team, represented the College’s
First Rugby and Cricket teams, received
Honours for Rugby and Cricket, was awarded
the Trophy for the Best Player of the
Year for both Rugby and Cricket, was
selected for the Mpumalanga U18A Cricket
Team and will represent this province
at the national Kaya Majola Coca-Cola
Week. He was rated as one of the top
batsman at the recent Mpumalanga trials,
scoring two half centuries for the Ehlanzeni
region against other regional sides
in Mpumalanga.
Best All-Round Sportsman
of the Year went to James Mathey.
This year alone he represented the First
Hockey Team which won the league and
played in the Mpumalanga Semi-finals.
He received Colours for Hockey, captained
the First Tennis Team and received Colours
for Tennis. James represented the First
Cricket XI for three consecutive years
and was selected for the Harry Shapiro
Cricket Academy to tour Australia with
the Forrester’s Cricket Club at
the beginning of this year. He represented
the school at Golf, playing in the annual
Dainfern Tournament and in a local tournament
hosted by Rob Ferreira against formidable
schools. James was a member of our Second
Rugby Team which qualified for the Mpumalanga
Semi-finals.
Sportswoman of the Year
went to Sharee Comley
who established herself as a top Tennis
player. She has played First Team Tennis
since Grade 9 and has subsequently represented
Ehlanzeni (Lowveld) and Mpumalanga.
Sharee is ranked Number 1 in Lowveld
Tennis as well as Number 1 Doubles player
in Mpumalanga with Meegan Lindsay. She
was selected for Mpumalanga Tennis,
won all her matches (singles and doubles)
in the Lowveld League and won all but
one of her matches against some of the
top tennis schools in England. She received
Honours for Tennis and was awarded the
Trophy for the Best Girls’ Tennis
player. This talented and versatile
sportswoman also represented the Girls
First Hockey Team who qualified for
the Mpumalanga Semi-finals and was a
member of the Girls First Cricket Team.
Best All-Round Sportswoman
of the Year was shared by Meegan
Lindsay and Kelsey
Matus. In 2009 Kelsey captained
the Swimming Team and received Colours
for Swimming, was a member of the First
Netball Team and received Colours for
Netball and was vice-captain of the
First Hockey side which qualified for
the Mpumalanga play-offs. Kelsey also
received Honours for Hockey.
Meegan captained both the First Hockey
and Tennis teams and received Honours
for Hockey and Tennis. She was awarded
the Trophy for the Best Girls’
Hockey Player in 2009 and represented
the Lowveld Tennis Team in 2008 and
2009. Meegan and her partner, Sharee
Comley, were ranked Number 1 Doubles
players in Mpumalanga. She was also
a member of the Girls’ First Cricket
Team and scored 98 not out in a League
match against Lowveld High.
