Achievements
2006
Eisteddfod
Uplands College really
made its voice heard at the Nelspruit
Standard Bank Eisteddfod. As well as having
more than 50 individual entries, over
150 Uplanders crossed the stage participating
in groups.
In
the dance category we had no fewer than
nine dancers taking part in group dances
(ballet, Latin-American, modern, tap and
hip-hop), all with a result of above 85%.
Individual dancers who received gold and
prestige awards were Nicole Bentley,
Dorné Germanos, Willemien Jerling,
Anne-Marie Smith and Marike
Smith.
In
the category for light music, we had four
silver certificates, and gold and prestige
certificates were awarded to Emily
Clarke, Anica Jansen van Vuuren, Robyn-Lee
Kellock, Alex Matthews, Katherine McGinn,
Tshepiso Phosa, Claire Thomson, Jessica
Train and Anne-Marie
Smith and Marike Smith.
Danny
Rosenfeldt entered his band privately,
obtaining 95%. The school orchestra received
85%. The Marimba Band scored 92% - one
of only two prestige awards.
In
the classical section (vocal and instrumental
Uplands College walked away with 24 silver
certificates, and gold was achieved by
Mrs Jerling, Franli
Muller, Anne-Marie Smith, Marike Smith,
Alex Spoor and the Girls’ Choir
(Vocal) and Teighyn Allmark,
Emily Clarke, Jo-Ann Stratford, Jessica
Train, Lente van der Westhiuzen, Wouter
van Velden and Amy Vieler
(Instrumental).
All
our students who took part in the English
speech and drama category received gold
and prestige. They were Eleana
Cesare, King Dlamini,
Robyn-Lee Kellock, Anne-Marie
Smith, Marike Smith
and Carina Viljoen.
We
had five trophy winners in three different
categories: Robyn-Lee Kellock,
Alex Matthews, Alex
Spoor, Marike Smith
and the Girls’ Choir, and one bursary
winner, Franli Muller!
The
prize-winners and the marimba band represented
the College on both prestigious gala evenings,
with Marike Smith winning
the trophy for the most versatile high
school participant.
Toastmasters
Competition
An international Toastmasters competition
was held between Swaziland, Mozambique
and South Africa in 2006. Uplands College
sent seven delegates to Maputo to participate.
We achieved a first place, a second place
and a third place.
ATKV
Afrikaans Poster Competition
Ewald Esselen won R1000
at the ATKV Afrikaans Poster Competition
at a formal function held during 2006.
The competition aims to promote Afrikaans
within the local community. Pupils had
to produce a poster with their own Afrikaans
expression. Ten schools participated and
over 300 pupils entered the competition. |
