Achievements
2007
Eisteddfod
Uplands College had approximately
40 individuals entering the Nelspruit
Standard Bank Eisteddfod 2007.
No
fewer than 18 students took part in the
Visual Art section, with very good results.
They were Emma James, Jessica
Odendaal, Khulani Hlatswayo, Michelle
Jansen, Nico van der Merwe, Ruby Wilson,
Sandile Tshabalala, Tania Prinsloo, Monet
Moolman, Stefanie van Velden, Ashleigh
Austin, Emily Clarke, Ewald Esselen, Michelle
Gros, Willemien Jerling, Mary-Ann Wiggill,
Nombuso Matsebula and Smangele
Sibuko.
In
the Dance category, no group dance was
awarded less than Gold and some girls
even achieved Prestige awards (above 90%)
for their performances! The ballerinas
were Jade Spence, Danika Beukes,
Nicole Bentley, Fiona Lourens, Ashar Ward
and Ruth de Borchgrave.
Individual dancers who took part in different
dance categories from ballet to hip-hop
were Nicole Bentley, Dorné
Germanos, Willemien Jerling, Anne-Marie
Smith and Marike Smith.
Nicole Bentley won the trophy
for best tap dancer.
In
the category for Light Music, Samantha
Davies, Willemien Jerling,
Alex Matthews, Makeeda Gamedze, Claire
Thomson and Anne-Marie
and Marike Smith participated.
Alex Matthews came second
in the category for own composition (high
school) and once again won the trophy
for most versatile participant. Congratulations
to this talented young musician.
Four
clarinet players participated in the Classical
section: Emily Clarke, Katherine
McGinn, Beth Walker and Sarah
Walker. Diana Seo played a violin
solo. Franli Muller walked
away with the trophy for best instrumentalist
(other than piano) for high school participants
and Lente van der Westhuizen
received a new trophy “Adjudicators
choice”.
In
the vocal section the two Smith
girls, Anne-Marie and
Marike both achieved
gold and higher. They also participated
in the English Drama section this year.
Uplands
College was well represented at the prestigious
gala evening with Franli Muller, Marike
Smith, Nicole Bentley, Jade Spence,
Danika Beukes, Ashar Ward, Fiona Lourens
and Ruth de Borchgrave
on the stage. Art works by Stefanie
van Velden, Alshleigh Austin, Ewald Esselen,
Willemien Jerling, Emily Clarke, Emma
James and Nico van der
Merwe were exhibited in the foyer
at the gala event.
