Cricket - Boys 2010

During the September 2010 holidays, Uplands College U15A Cricket side undertook a tour to Klerksdorp to improve players’ individual skills and to build team unity. Three declaration matches and one T20 game awaited the boys on what would be a demanding four days. Potchefstroom Gimnasium provided the first opposition in a match made memorable by individual performances from two talented young Uplands cricketers. Cameron Jacobsz put on a fine display of power batting, hitting an unbeaten 100 from a mere 89 balls, which included 15 fours and two sixes. Batting second he also helped his team to a total of 278 for 4, resulting in a lead of 118. Jacobsz’s fine performance was, however, eclipsed by that of his teammate, Matt Nepgen, who produced an all-round performance of rare quality.

Uplands was made to field first after losing the toss and Nepgen ripped through Potch Gim’s batting line-up, snaring seven wickets for 41 in his 9 overs. His pace and swing were just too much for the opposition’s batsmen and it is a testament to his accuracy that six of his victims were bowled. As if a seven-wicket haul was not enough Nepgen, an U14 boy, followed it up with a century of his own, hitting 102 not out off 128 balls. Uplands went on to win the match by an innings and 31 runs.

The next match of substance was played on the third day against Hoërskool Wesvalia of Klerksdorp. Uplands won the toss and sent Wesvalia in to bat. The Uplands bowling was on target again and Wesvalia was bowled out for 150. Matt Nepgen and Cameron Jacobsz again did the damage for the visitors with scores of 86 not out and 66 respectively. The two talented youngsters saw their team through to a total 228 all out. Uplands then took the 5 wickets required for victory to win by an innings and 55 runs. Simon Kamstra was particularly impressive, taking 3 for 13 in his 6 overs.

The last match of the tour was played against Klerksdorp Hoër and would prove to be the toughest. The Uplands batting line-up failed to get going and was bundled out for 123 with only the captain, Simon Kamstra, providing any real resistance, scoring a patient 59. Although the Uplands bowlers had their chances, few were taken and Klerksdorp managed 194 for 9 declared. The long tour was starting to take effect and Uplands’ second innings was a non-event, resulting in a win for Klerksdorp by an innings and 46 runs.

The tour proved to be an overwhelming success and was thoroughly enjoyed by the boys. Special thanks must go to Mr Hennie Joubert, the cricket pro at Uplands, who put the tour together. Tours such as this are likely to become a fixture at Uplands College as it looks to strengthen its cricket club under the watchful eye of Mr Joubert.

Cricket - Boys 2009

The Uplands 1st XI played against Benoni High School on Friday, 26 June in a T20 match hosted by Uplands. We batted first and scored 114/4 in our allotted 20 overs. Benoni High was bowled out for 94 thus us winning by 20 runs.

Willowridge from Pretoria visited us during the week of 21 July to play a few matches. On Thursday, the 1st XI played a 50 over match against our visitors. Uplands, without some of our regular 1st team players because of holidays, batted first and scored a meagre 137 all out. James Mathey (40 runs) and Kayde Ball (19 runs) were the main contributors with the bat.

Willowridge was well on track to win comfortably, but James Mathey completed a man-of-the-match performance by taking 5/43 in 8.4 overs. He was well supported by Joshua Rood 3/25 in 8 overs and Garth van Rooyen with 2/34 in 8 overs. Uplands managed to win by 7 runs!

The same two teams played a T20 match on 23 July. This time Willowridge batted first and was restricted to 94/9 in their 20 overs. Joshua Rood took 2/12 and James Mathey 2/18. Uplands were in full control throughout their innings and scored 95/1 thus securing victory by 9 wickets. Tyrone Tilly scored a blistering 45 not out and James Mathey scored 21 not out.

The 2nd XI also played against Willowridge on 22 and 23 July in a T20 format. Willowridge batted first and scored 92/6. Uplands scored 94/7 and won by 3 wickets in a very closely contested affair. Cameron Jacobsz top scored with 22 not out. The match the next day was a one-sided affair. Uplands went into bat and finished on 122/3 in 20 overs. Nicholas Ferreira hit some lusty blows in his innings of 48. Willowridge were bowled out for 71 runs. Heather McGinn took 2 wickets. Uplands went into bat and scored 103 for 3. Meegan Lindsay became the first Uplands girl to score 50 runs in an innings. The ever reliable Grace Howland scored 20 runs. It was an overall good performance by the girls and they won by 7 wickets with no nails broken, no mascara smutches.

The Girls’ best performance was against Lowveld High at the College. Uplands won the toss and chose to bowl first. They had the ascendancy right from the beginning and wickets tumbled with regular interval. Lowveld were bowled out for 56 runs in the 19th over. The main wicket taker was Heather McGinn who took three wickets. She was ably supported by Grace Howland, Gretchen Dietz and Jenaed Brodell who took two each. Jenaed contributed more by taking two stunning catches, one a la Jonty Rhodes style.

Uplands went into bat and scored 57 runs with only 1 wicket down thus winning the match by 9 wickets. The top scorer was Grace Howland with 25 runs not out and Meegan Lindsay scored 18 not out. It was a spirited performance by the Uplands girls. The bowling was tight and the fielding was crisp. Grace Howland was named Player of the Match with a good all-round performance.

Their next game was against Penryn College. Penryn batted first and was bowled out for 37 runs. Danielle Balcou, Claudia Howe and Grace Howland all took two wickets. Meegan Lindsay and Grace Howland scored the winning runs and Uplands finished on 38/3 after 10 overs. Uplands won by 7 wickets.

This past Monday, Uplands played a return match against Bergvlam. It was by far their toughest opposition. Uplands batted first this time and managed to score a credible 104 runs in their 20 overs with Meegan Lindsay and Janaed Brodell both scoring 27 runs. Bergvlam went into bat and scored 91/7 in their 20 overs. Gretchen Dietz was the pick of the bowlers and took three wickets. Uplands won by 13 runs.

The Uplands Girls’ secured a spot in the Mpumalanga semi-finals on Wednesday, 10 September at the College. Their opponents were from the Highveld: Greendale High School from Witbank. Greendale batted first and their 1st wicket partnership set the tone to boast a competitive score. They made 101/3 after their 25 overs. Uplands was scuttled out for 34 runs with Meegan Lindsay scoring 17. Uplands was outclassed by a well-organised outfit, but can reflect back on a very successful season.
