Golf - Dainfern Golf Tournament

2010

Uplands College embarked on a historic first friendly golf tour to Swaziland where we played a friendly competition against Waterford College. The tour got off to the worst possible start when we discovered the fine chaps at Josefsdal Border post harboured a dislike of redheads. Jason Bruce-Brand’s Irish passport was not deemed adequate and Jason had to be collected from the border by his dad.

The next hour and a half included the most treacherous roads ever encountered by these tough-as-nails private school pupils. It was unsurprising to say the least when the vote went against returning via Josefsdal. We eventually arrived safely on the fine fairways on Nkonyeni Golf Estate, albeit slightly late. The immaculate new course left all of us is awe as the golf itself battled to come to terms with the fantastic layout.

Alex Knoop was chief destroyer as Uplands fought back at a splendid Royal Swazi course on the Saturday and lived up to his promise with a superb eagle. Ian Weir and Jono Myburgh ensured they balanced playing some good golf with making the most of their final school tour. Jason West played some great golf over the two rounds and Oscar Kolbe, Christiaan le Roux and Tim Lange weighed in with some fine shots as they improved over the weekend. We enjoyed a quiet nine holes by ourselves on the Sunday before returning to White River.

This fixture will hopefully become an annual home and away fixture as we try to catch up on the high standards set by Waterford College.

2008

Four of our golfers (Daniel Abraham, Ian Weir, James Mathey and Gareth Mittermayer) represented the College at the prestigious Dainfern Golf Tournament during the last week of the April 2008 holiday period.

The going was tough, with wet conditions (making the course play long) and very early morning tee-off times. After three rounds of good golf, the boys were placed 19th out of a total of 25 teams. Given that we beat the likes of DHS from Durban and Michaelhouse, the result was quite commendable.

In the individual placings, on gross, Daniel Abraham was 54th (out of 100 golfers), Ian Weir 63rd, James Mathey 77th and Gareth Mittermayer 91st. On net, Ian Weir achieved a very credible 21st, Daniel Abraham 32nd, James Mathey 62nd and Gareth Mittermayer 83rd.
