Uplands
Festival and Founders Derby
(27-28 May 2011)
The last week-end
in May was highlighted by the
Uplands Festival and Founders
Derby against Penryn. It is
by far the biggest inter-schools
derby in the Lowveld and, moreover,
it is played in a tremendous
spirit where true sportsmanship
prevails. Besides the excitement
of what was unravelling on the
sports fields, there was also
theatre, live music, art exhibitions,
a beer-and-food marquee, kids’
entertainment, an inter-schools
show-jumping event and a mountain
bike race. The SPCA dog show
and some jazz music concluded
the activities on Sunday afternoon.
The sports fixtures
against Penryn started on Friday
afternoon with boys’ hockey
and netball. The 1st Team netball
girls won their match in dramatic
fashion by one goal. Standing
on the balcony of our sports
centre during the boys’
hockey 1st Team match and looking
down on the two schools and
their supporters under floodlights
was truly impressive. Saturday
was girls’ hockey and
rugby. These were equally impressive
with spectacular fixtures for
everyone to enjoy.
