Subjects Choice for Grades 10-12

For the senior phase Uplands College prepares pupils to write the examinations of the Independent Examination Board (IEB), the examination of choice of top South African independent schools.

Pupils are prepared to do seven subjects as “a manageable minimum”.

Some pupils may wish to choose to do extra subjects, such as Additional Mathematics or Music, but these would have to be taken during the afternoons.

A wide range of subjects is available in a variety of subject packages. The combinations offered in any given year depend on several factors, including the demand for a given subject in a specific year, the availability of staff and changes to the legal framework within which all schools are required to operate.

At present, and in accordance with current South African Legislation, all pupils at Uplands College are required to take English (as this is our language of instruction) and Life Orientation. Pupils will have to choose between Afrikaans and Zulu as their second language (or French in the case of immigrants). In addition, all pupils are expected to offer either Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy as part of their subject choice. They are expected to choose three other subjects to make up their total of seven.

The subjects offered are as follows:

The school’s counsellor is available to assist students with their choices.
