Teachers
in Partnership
This is the original “flagship”
project of the Outreach
Programme. It involves
week-long in-service training
workshops at Uplands Prep
School for primary school
teachers from our partner
schools.
We also offer accredited
computer literacy courses
and training in THRASS,
an integrated reading,
spelling and handwriting
programme.

“Teachers
for Excellence”
The “Teachers
of Excellence”
programme grew out
of an existing Secondary
School intervention,
in collaboration
with the Department
of Education, the
University of Johannesburg,
Uplands and our
donors.
Commencing
in 2010, we will
work with active
teachers with a
diploma in education
who have a bias
towards maths and
science.

Workshop 1 |
We
will offer 50 secondary school teachers
from township and rural schools
in Mpumalanga an Advanced Certificate
in Education (ACE) in Maths, combined
with other compulsory skills (such
as computer literacy, English language
improvement, leadership development
and mathematical knowledge for teaching)
that will enhance teaching and learning
at their schools. Their studies
will be based at Uplands, making
use of the facilities and expertise
that the schools have to offer.
It
is our belief that this innovative
approach to teaching, especially
Mathematics, will change the face
of education in South Africa, creating
a better qualified, more motivated
and more competent teaching fraternity
that strives for excellence. For
every teacher that can be uplifted
and inspired through this programme,
many children who pass through the
hands of these teachers will benefit
in future years. |

The success of this
programme for Grade

two years has prompted
us to double its
scope. In 2010 we
will be working
with 100 Grade 11
and Grade 12 learners.
Every
second Saturday
in term time they
will attend extra
lessons in Maths,
Science, Computer
Literacy, Language

School
Governance
The
key to an effective
school is strong leadership
and management. We
collaborate with the
Matthew Goniwe School
of Leadership and
Governance and the
University of Johannesburg
to offer principals
and deputy principals
from township and
rural schools in Mpumalanga
an Advanced Certificate
in Education (ACE)
in School Management
and Leadership based
on a "practice-based
developmental model"
to bring about transformation
in their schools.
Fifty students qualified
at the end of 2007,
and the current cohort
of 25 starts Year
Two of the course
at the beginning of
2010. |
